Notre Dame football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by the Fighting Irish experts

Notre Dame football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by the Fighting Irish experts

The Marcus Freeman era at Notre Dame got off to a rocky start. He replaced Brian Kelly as head coach when Kelly left for LSU and promptly lost his first three games. However, he rebounded to win nine games in his first full season guiding the program and improved to 10 wins in 2023. Now, he’ll set his sights on the expanded College Football Playoff, as Notre Dame opened training camp with many expecting that they’ll be a top-10 program in 2024. They have a talented Notre Dame football roster, but how far can Freeman and company go?

All-American safety Xavier Watts is back to anchor Freeman’s defense and the Irish will turn to Duke transfer Riley Leonard at quarterback after Sam Hartman graduated. Who else steps up this season and what other Notre Dame football camp storylines should you follow as the Irish prepare for their season-opener against Texas A&M? Top Notre Dame Fighting Irish practice storylines

Replacing running back LT Joe Alt will be one of the highest priorities for Freeman. Alt became the Irish’s first Unanimous All-American tackle in 30 years last season, which led to him being a top-five draft pick. Alt skipped the team’s bowl game, as freshman Charles Jagusah got the start, and he appears to be in the lead to man the position in 2024 even after playing in just two games last year.

Right tackle Blake Fisher also departed for the NFL, so the Irish have questions at both offensive tackle positions. Tosh Baker and Aamil Wagner are expected to battle for the right side, but Guerby Lambert is waiting in the wings. The freshman was an early enrollee in January and was the eighth-ranked tackle prospect in his class by 247Sports. Get more updates on the Notre Dame RB at Irish Illustrated.

Audric Estime rushed for 1,341 yards and 18 touchdowns last season but he entered the 2024 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos. Now, it appears that Jeremiyah Love is presumed to take over as the lead back after averaging 5.4 yards per carry and producing 462 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns as a freshman.

Love was a top-100 prospect coming out of high school and he’ll likely be an even more explosive runner than Estime. However, Estime had over 20 pounds on Love and his ability to handle 15 to 20 touches on a weekly basis was an asset for the Notre Dame depth chart during his two years as a starter. Can Love handle a similar workload to help a Notre Dame offense that is replacing eight starters from last season? Find out more about Mike Denbrock’s new offense at Irish Illustrated
