WWE’s main roster currently houses nine championships. SummerSlam on Aug. 3 saw four new champions crowned in a show that set the stage for the rest of 2024.
King and Queen of the Ring tournament winners Gunther and Nia Jax successfully challenged for the world heavyweight and WWE women’s titles, respectively, while LA Knight and Bron Breakker became main roster champions for the first time.
The biggest story coming out of SummerSlam was undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes vs. Solo Sikoa but it had less to do with the title and more to do with its implications. Roman Reigns returned for the first time since losing to Rhodes at WrestleMania 40, laying out Solo Sikoa to set the stage for a huge Bloodline vs. Bloodline feud.
As 2024 reaches its halfway point, take a look at who holds all the championships on the WWE main roster.
Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes (defeated Roman Reigns on April 7, 2024)
Rhodes’ long journey to win the championship that had eluded his legendary wrestling family ended at Night 2 of WrestleMania 40 when he defeated Roman Reigns. Rhodes came up short against Reigns at WrestleMania 39 but got his revenge one year later, overcoming “Bloodline Rules” to end Reigns’ 1,316 days as champion.
World Heavyweight Championship: Gunther (defeated Damian Priest on Aug. 3, 2024)
Gunther’s remarkable main roster run continues. The longest-reigning intercontinental champion in WWE history parlayed his King of the Ring tournament victory to challenge Priest for the world heavyweight title at SummerSlam successfully. Gunther’s victory is slightly marred by Finn Balor’s betrayal of his Judgement Day leader Priest. “The Ring General” will nonetheless carry his world title into his old stomping grounds of Germany for WWE’s inaugural Bash in Berlin PPV.
Women’s World Championship: Liv Morgan (defeated Becky Lynch on May 25, 2024)
Morgan set out on a self-proclaimed “revenge tour” after suffering an injury at the hands of Rhea Ripley — swearing to take her women’s world championship. After injuring Ripley in a backstage altercation, Morgan turned her attention to Becky Lynch after “The Man” won the vacated title in a battle royal. The two clashed at King and Queen of the Ring, with Morgan coming away with the win after some unintentional interference from Dominik Mysterio. “Dirty Dom” arrived late in the match and slid a chair in the ring to assist Lynch, but Morgan DDT’d Lynch on the chair instead and hit her Oblivion finisher for the victory.
WWE Women’s Championship: Nia Jax (defeated Bayley on Aug. 3, 2024)
Jax is WWE women’s champion for the second time in her nine-year professional wrestling career. Jax won the Queen of the Ring tournament in May to earn a title shot against Bayley at SummerSlam. Jax overwhelmed the underdog champion for most of the match. When Bayley finally got the upper hand, Jax found crucial aid from her new ally. Tiffany Stratton teased cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase, allowing Jax to land a match-ending blow and become champion.
Intercontinental Championship: Bron Breakker (defeated Sami Zayn on Aug. 3, 2024)
Breakker would not be denied a second time. The former NXT champion failed to defeat Zayn for the intercontinental title at Money in the Bank but cut through the fighting champion in a short rematch at SummerSlam. Breakker put away Zayn with a pair of spears to capture the intercontinental title just over three months into his rookie main roster year.
United States Championship: LA Knight (defeated Logan Paul on Aug. 3, 2024)
It took Knight more than half of his life but he’s finally a WWE main roster champion. Knight defeated Logan Paul in an exciting match to capture the U.S. championship. Knight had a breakout year in 2023 but had yet to win a main roster singles title 21 years into his pro wrestling career. Knight smoothly countered a buckshot lariat from Paul into a pivotal BFT to score the pinfall.
World Tag Team Championship: JD McDonagh & Finn Balor (defeated The Awesome Truth on June 24, 2024)
Amid Judgment Day’s turmoil, mostly driven by Liv Morgan’s constant harassment of Dominik Mysterio, the group scored a major win. After being “saved” by Mysterio, Morgan helped Judgment Day out by manipulating R-Truth into giving McDongah and Balor a title shot against Truth and The Miz. Morgan then distracted and attacked Truth, setting up the finish as McDonagh and Balor grabbed the titles on Raw.
WWE Tag Team Championship: Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga (won on Aug. 2, 2024)
The Bloodline has gold once again. One thing previously separating Sikoa and Reigns’ versions of The Bloodline was the new group’s lack of titles. Fatu and Tonga remedied this by defeating #DIY to become WWE tag team champs on the final SmackDown before SummerSlam. The finishing sequence saw Fatu hit Johnny Gargano with a popup Samoan Drop, jump-up moonsault and impaler DDT successively to lay the match to rest.
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship: Isla Dawn & Alba Fyre (defeated Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill on June 15, 2024)
While Clash at the Castle was a bad night for Piper Niven and Drew McIntyre in front of their hometown fans in Scotland, the fans did get a crowning moment for locals when Dawn and Fyre emerged from a triple threat match against champions Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill and the team of Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark with the titles. Belair and Cargill were protected by not having to take the fall and the fans got a nice moment in seeing a few locals capture main roster gold for the first time in their careers.
