The Alabama football fall camp is in full swing as the Crimson Tide head into their first season under head coach Kalen DeBoer. The former Washington coach is trying to drill down starters at multiple positions, so fall camp is crucial for the coaching staff. Alabama debuted at No. 5 in the preseason Coaches Poll, the school’s lowest preseason ranking since 2009. The Crimson Tide will open the campaign against unranked Western Kentucky in Tuscaloosa on Aug. 31.
One position that is not up for debate is quarterback, as Jalen Milroe returns as the clear starter atop the Alabama football depth chart. He threw for 2,834 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions last year and will look for an even stronger season under his new offensive-minded coaching staff. Top Alabama Crimson Tide practice storylines
Alabama’s primary running backs from last season, Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams, are no longer on the roster, as McCellan was drafted by the Falcons and Williams transferred to Florida State. Their departure leaves Jam Miller and Justice Haynes as the top running backs entering the 2024 season. Miller played the RB3 role ahead of Haynes last year, but they are both talented options for the starting job this season.
Former 4-star prospect Richard Young is also in the mix, while Daniel Hill and Kevin Riley are both 4-star freshmen. This leaves Alabama with zero career starts in its running back room, with Haynes, Miller and Young playing a combined 178 offensive snaps in 2023. DeBoer has a history of utilizing multiple running backs instead of relying on a bell cow back, so fall camp will be important as he establishes a depth chart. Another one of the Alabama football headlines surrounds the Crimson Tide’s linebackers. Alabama should have two of the best inside linebackers in the SEC this season, as Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell are back after playing key roles last year. Lawson started all 11 games he played, while Campbell made eight starts and appeared in 13 contests.
There is not much experience on the depth chart behind those players, so the Crimson Tide will hope they can stay healthy. As for the outside linebackers, there is not an established starter for the Wolf position in defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s scheme. Quandarrius Robinson, Keanu Koht, Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre are all contenders, which is something that the Bama247 team is keeping a close eye on during fall camp.
