The preseason AP Poll is out and the Michigan Wolverines check in at No. 9. Expectations remain high for the defending champions, but voters are also acknowledging that Michigan has work to do to overcome the loss of head coach Jim Harbaugh and 18 starters from last year’s title team. Michigan football camp is rolling in Ann Arbor as the opener against Fresno State approaches on Aug 31. Top Michigan Wolverines practice storylines
Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren are still considered the three favorites to win the starting quarterback job. However, freshman Jadyn Davis “has drawn consistent praise for his growth from the spring,” according to Webb. A four-star quarterback in the 2024 signing class, Davis might not be a serious contender to start the opener at this point, but his development is a positive storyline for the position’s depth and future.
Orji brings the most athletic upside to the position, while Tuttle, a former transfer from Indiana, has the most Big Ten experience. Early reports from camp indicate that Orji is standing out as the favorite, though Webb has emphasized that “this race is not over.” Get more updates on the Michigan QB at The Michigan Insider.
Michigan fans are also eager to see the new-look defense under Martindale. The long-time NFL assistant has ties to the Harbaugh family after working with John Harbaugh and the Ravens from 2012-21. Now he takes over for Jesse Minter, who followed Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers.
One of the foundations of this unit will be the interior defensive line. Michigan has arguably the best defensive tackle duo in the country in Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant and Martindale is looking to keep them on the field more after the 2023 defense featured a big rotation. “I’ve been working on my conditioning, going more plays in a row,” Grant told TMI. “Coach Wink has been stressing that with me and Mason because we have bigger and more competition early.” Find out more about Sherrone Moore’s new offense at The Michigan Insider.
