The Johnson University men’s basketball team decided to do a special workout on Wednesday to honor the almost 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Head coach Logan Sharp shared a video of his players running on social media and explained the idea behind it.
“Today we ran 2,996 lines as a team to remember each life lost on 9/11. Never forget!” the coach wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
It does seem like a grueling workout, but one well-worth it because of the meaning behind it. Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, when terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and crashed them into the Twin Towers in New York City as well as the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The fourth plane went down in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania after passengers fought to take back the plane. The 2,996 people who died that day made it the deadliest terrorist attack in history.
The majority of college athletes were not even born yet when 9/11 happened, but the Royals still put in the effort and got the job done.
Sharp took over as the program in 2023 and guided the team to a 16-13 season. That was a significant improvement from the Royals going 9-19 the previous year. It was also their first winning season since 2020-21. Before joining the Royals, Sharp spent time at Eastern Nazarene College.
