Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson returned to action on Wednesday in her team’s win over the Indiana Fever, and has resumed her chase for the first 1,000-point season in WNBA history. Wilson had sat out of the Aces’ loss to the New York Liberty on Sunday due to an ankle injury, which was her first missed game since 2019, but made a swift recovery.

For the season, Wilson is averaging 27.3 points per game, which would be the highest single-season scoring average by a wide margin, besting Taurasi’s 25.3 points per game in 2006. Furthermore, Wilson has surpassed Jewell Loyd for the single-season scoring record

After pouring in another 27 points in the win over the Fever, Wilson now needs 44 points to get to 1,000 for the season. The Aces have four games remaining, so it’s just a matter of when, not if, she’ll do so. At her current pace, she would create the 1,000-point club during the Aces’ Sept. 15 game against the Connecticut Sun

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Wilson’s dominant scoring campaign is that she’s remained highly efficient. She’s shooting 52.1% from the field, which is the second-best mark of her career and good for seventh in the league. That’s while taking 19.6 shots per game, which would be the third-most ever. Of the six other seasons where a player has averaged at least 19 shots, the next best field goal percentage is Diana Taurasi at 45.2.
