Inter Miami breaks the MLS single-season points record

Inter Miami breaks the MLS single-season points record

After a comeback victory, there’s a new holder of the MLS record for most points in a season in Inter Miami after defeating the New England Revolution 6-2.

The Herons were behind 2-0 early, but thanks to Luis Suarez, they were able to level the score by halftime against the Revolution. Once Benjamin Cremashchi scored the go-ahead goal in the 59th minute of play, Miami didn’t let up.

It was a poetic victory as the Herons were able to persevere and defeat the current holders of the MLS single-season points record to raise the bar to 74 points.  After adding Lionel Messi to the roster midway through last season, Inter Miami has reached new heights adding Suarez and winning trophies along the way.

To make sure that the match was out of reach, Messi added a hat trick from the bench in the second half to get to 19 goals on the season, two behind Suarez for the team lead with 20.

The Herons have won Leagues Cup and the Supporters’ Shield since Messi has joined but their focus will be on winning another trophy. When New England set the points record they were knocked out at the hands of New York City FC in their first playoff match and that’s something that Tata Martino will want the Herons to avoid.

They’ve learned to win without Messi when he was injured, and this has become a truly complete Miami squad so they’ll now have to ensure that they don’t follow the same fate of the Revolution.

It will be a time to step up, but with or without Messi, that’s what Miami has done all season and will continue to do with the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Confrence.
