Under the guidance of Leonard Hamilton, Florida State basketball made every NCAA Tournament held between 2017 and 2021 and advanced at least one round in each. That run was highlighted by an Elite Eight appearance in 2018. The Seminoles, however, have fallen on harder times recently, missing the Big Dance in three straight seasons. They’re below .500 in ACC play again this year and in danger of missing a fourth March Madness appearance. Hamilton will try to make one more run in 2025, but he announced on Monday that this will be his final year as the 76-year-old coach will resign at the end of this season.
He’ll leave FSU with more than 450 regular-season wins and at least 14 NCAA Tournament victories. In the meantime, the Florida State basketball head coaching search will commence and the Seminoles will be looking for the right candidate to start a new era at FSU after Hamilton stayed for more than 20 years. Top Florida State basketball coach candidates
One name the staff has identified as a potential target on the FSU basketball coaching hot board is Sacramento Kings assistant coach Luke Loucks. FSU fans might remember him as a point guard for the Seminoles from 2008-12. He never made it to the NBA, but he did carve out a five-year professional career in various leagues around the world.
Those international connections helped land him a job as an assistant coach and player devolvement coordinator for the Nigerian national team. He was also an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors during some of their dominant seasons, including the 2017 and 2018 title runs.
Loucks has worked as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings since 2022 and helped guide them to their first NBA playoff appearance since 2006 during the 2022-23 campaign.
“He is a Florida native and has a good understanding of the current environment surrounding the program,” Nee said of Loucks. See more candidates at Noles247.
