Mark Pope and the Wildcats will try to strengthen the Kentucky basketball roster via the college basketball transfer portal again this offseason. The Wildcats had a successful season in Pope’s first year as head coach. Kentucky notched eight top-15 victories last season before bowing out against Tennessee in the Sweet 16. Pope took over a Kentucky basketball lineup that had zero scholarship players when he arrived on campus, so he’s proven he can navigate the transfer portal to create a competitive team.
The portal closes on April 22, and with five key pieces of the Kentucky basketball rotation running out of eligibility this offseason, Pope needs significant reinforcements. Who are the top Kentucky basketball transfer targets in this cycle, and what other avenues might Pope be exploring to improve the Kentucky basketball depth chart? Kentucky basketball roster news
The Wildcats received good news over the weekend when center Brandon Garrison announced he will be returning to Lexington for his junior season. Garrison was a 2023 McDonald’s All-American and averaged 5.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.9 steals per game while shooting 50.9% from the field last season. Garrison, Otega Oweh, Collin Chandler, Trent Noah and Travis Perry are all expected to return to Kentucky next season, giving the Wildcats some much-needed continuity.
Pope and his staff have also hit the transfer portal hard, signing several players expected to make an immediate impact. Among those players set to play for the Wildcats next season is Alabama transfer Mouhamed Dioubate. The 6-foot-7 forward brings a defensive presence as he ranked among the top three on the Crimson Tide in rebounds, steals and blocks per game. Pope got a first-hand look at how Dioubate can impact a game as he had 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in Alabama’s SEC Tournament victory over Kentucky.
