The New York Giants had to shuffle their starters along the offensive line ahead of their Thursday night matchup against the Washington Football Team due to injury, and they were forced to shuffle yet again on their second drive of the game.

On New York’s first play of its second possession, offensive lineman Nick Gates went down with a lower leg fracture, the Giants announced. He was quickly attended to by the medical staff, put in an air cast and carted off the field. Gates was seen smiling and waving to the fans as he was carted off. He will likely be placed on IR, ending his season.

Gates was playing at left guard on Thursday night, but was previously the starting center. It was reported before the game that Billy Price was going to hop in at center while Gates slid over to replace the injured Shane Lemieux.

Gates has spent the past four years with the Giants. Undrafted out of Nebraska in 2018, he missed his entire rookie season with an injury. He eventually moved into the starting lineup, and started in all 16 games at center in 2020.
