Liverpool join the EFL Cup jamboree on Tuesday with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to wrestle back sole ownership of the title of this competition’s most successful side. From 1996 to April this year the Reds were the most successful team in this competition’s history but that is a title they must now share with Manchester City, who have dominated this competition under Pep Guardiola.

Success in domestic cups has so far eluded Klopp, who will certainly have bigger fish to fry than the EFL Cup but equally will not want to see his side’s early season momentum arrested by a struggling Norwich side. Here is how you can watch the match and what you need to know:

Storylines

Norwich: With Daniel Farke having become the first manager to lose 15 straight Premier League games (over the course of the 2019-20 season in which they were relegated and this one), the EFL Cup offers a chance to find that winning feeling again and play like the team who crushed Bournemouth 6-0 in the second round. Whatever sort of Liverpool team Norwich host they simply will not be able to defend as carelessly as they did on Saturday in a bruising 3-1 defeat to Watford.

“I expect a highly motivated and top class Liverpool side,” said Daniel Farke. “The most important topic for us is to improve the defending of our own goal.”

Liverpool: That Klopp handed press conference responsibilities to his assistant Pep Lijnders offers a sense of the priorities of the Liverpool manager, who will hand a rest to goalkeeper Alisson with Caoimhin Kelleher coming into the side. Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be risked after missing the win over Crystal Palace with illness while Thiago Alcantara will be unavailable for both tomorrow’s game and the weekend’s Premier League clash against Brentford.

Prediction

Liverpool generally do not name strong sides for these games whilst Norwich surely cannot afford to lose many more games. This could be a chance for them to boost morale at Carrow Road. PICK: Norwich 1 Liverpool 0
