The first sprint of the 2024 Formula One season will take place on Sunday at 3 a.m. ET with the Chinese Grand Prix 2024. This will be the first Chinese GP since 2019, and it’s the first of six races this year to use the sprint format, in which the Chinese GP 2024 grid will be determined by a 100km race on Saturday. Max Verstappen won four of the six sprints last year, amongst many other victories, while Sergio Perez and Oscar Piastri claimed the others. The 2024 Chinese Grand Prix will take place at Shanghai International Circuit, which features 16 turns over its 3.388 miles.
The latest 2024 Chinese GP odds have Verstappen as the -450 favorite (risk $450 to win $100), despite him never winning across five China starts. Red Bull Racing operates the top two spots on the Formula 1 odds board with Sergio Perez next in line at +1100. Charles Leclerq, who is third in the F1 standings behind the aforementioned, is at +1200, while six-time Chinese GP winner Lewis Hamilton is at +5000. Developed by daily Fantasy pro and SportsLine predictive data engineer Mike McClure, this proprietary Formula 1 prediction model simulates every race 10,000 times, taking into account factors such as track history and recent results. It’s had a strong history of success in motorsports, correctly predicting nine NASCAR winners since the 2021 season and its projected leaderboards have forecasted winners across multiple racing formats.
The model has been scorching hot when it comes to picking Formula 1 race events dating back to 2021. It nailed both of Charles Leclerc’s wins in 2022, and at the 2021 Mexican Grand Prix, the model was strongly backing Verstappen as its top pick. The result: Verstappen dominated the field and ran away with a surprise victory.
The model followed that up by calling Verstappen’s win at the Rolex Emilia Romagna GP in April and then nailed his wins again in Belgium, the Netherlands, Japan, the United States, Mexico and Abu Dhabi. It also nailed all 19 of Verstappen’s wins during the 2023 season and then called all three of the defending champion’s wins to start the 2024 season. Anyone who followed the model’s lead on those plays has seen huge returns.
Now, the model has dialed in on the 2024 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix and just released its coveted picks and leaderboard projections. You can head to SportsLine now to see the complete 2024 Chinese Grand Prix projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 Formula 1 Chinese GP predictions
One surprise: The model is fading Carlos Sainz, predicting he doesn’t even make the podium even though he’s one of the top favorites at +1200. After withdrawing in Saudi Arabia due to appendix surgery, Sainz bounced back with a win in Australia and then a third place in Japan. However, China has been a thorn in his side throughout his career. Over five starts at Shanghai International Circuit, Sainz has never finished better than seventh. His last appearance at the track was his very worst in China as he finished a disappointing 14th place.
Shanghai International Circuit is one of 19 F1 tracks that Sainz has raced at least five times, and it’s by far the one he’s had the least success at. He has multiple top 5s at each of the other 18 tracks, so he was at least competitive even if he didn’t make a podium. The same can’t be said for China as the Spaniard has never even led for a single lap across those five starts. Given his short F1 odds for Sunday, Sainz is a driver to avoid with 2024 Chinese GP bets. See who else the model is backing and fading at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix right here.
