Texas vs. TCU odds, line, spread: 2021 college football picks, Week 5 predictions from model on 81-61 run

Texas vs. TCU odds, line, spread: 2021 college football picks, Week 5 predictions from model on 81-61 run

The TCU Horned Frogs will attempt to extend their recent dominance over the Texas Longhorns when the heated in-state rivals meet Saturday in a college football showdown. Neither team is currently ranked, a rarity in the series, but the outcome still stands to have a major impact on the fate of both programs. Last year, the Frogs stunned the Longhorns 33-31 in Austin as a double-digit underdog to send Texas’ season into a tailspin. TCU has won six of the last seven meetings in this series, including the last three in Fort Worth. However, the Longhorns hold a 63-27-1 all-time edge in the rivalry.

Kickoff is set for noon ET from Amon G. Carter Stadium. Caesars Sportsbook list the Longhorns as four-point favorites in the latest Texas vs. TCU odds. The over-under for total points is set at 65. Why Texas can cover

Last week, the Longhorns showed how lethal their offense can be when it gets rolling. They amassed 639 yards of total offense against the overmatched Red Raiders with a nearly equal split of production in the running and passing games.

Casey Thompson appears to have taken the reins at quarterback after he took over in the second half of a loss to Arkansas two weeks ago. The junior went 18-of-23 for 303 yards with five touchdowns against one interception. He added 29 rushing yards and another score.

The ground game also made strides as Texas pounded away for 332 total yards, with four players totaling at least 42 rushing yards. Sophomore Bijan Robinson led the way with 137 yards on 18 carries.

Why TCU can cover

TCU’s Gary Patterson is known as a defense-minded coach, and he appears to have his work cut out for him following last week’s performance against SMU in which the Horned Frogs yielded nearly 600 yards of total offense and gave up 350 yards of rushing offense. The latter is even more uncharacteristic of a Patterson-cached club because his teams have a history of controlling the line of scrimmage.

Even so, the Frogs still managed to force three turnovers and register four tackles for loss against the Mustangs and help could be on the way Saturday.

Defensive end Khari Coleman, who shared Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honors last season, has yet to see a snap this year because of a lingering leg injury. He led all freshmen with 15 tackles for loss last year, and Patterson told the media this week there’s a good chance Coleman makes his debut Saturday. Cornerback Noah Daniels is yet to play in the 2021 season as he continues to recover from a leg injury suffered last year. When healthy, Daniels is widely considered the top NFL prospect on TCU’s defense.
