Michigan football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by Wolverines experts

Michigan football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by Wolverines experts

The Michigan Wolverines will begin preparing for their title defense with summer camp practices in Ann Arbor officially underway. Jim Harbaugh and a veteran squad went undefeated in 2023, beating Alabama and Washington in the College Football Playoffs on their way to a national championship. Many new faces will be leading the way in 2024, including head coach Sherrone Moore, who took over following Harbaugh’s exit to the NFL a couple weeks after winning the title.

Moore will breaking in a new quarterback on his Michigan football roster, a mostly new offensive line and several new pieces on defense. However, Michigan still has stars such in its Michigan football depth chart like running back Donovan Edwards, tight end Colston Loveland, defensive lineman Mason Graham and cornerback Will Johnson. Top Michigan Wolverines practice storylines

All eyes are on the quarterback battle as the Wolverines look to replace J.J. McCarthy, who was picked No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Alex Orji is perhaps the most intriguing option. The former three-star prospect out of Texas has been used primarily as a runner through two seasons. The Wolverines gave him multiple carries in big games against Michigan State, Iowa, Alabama and Washington last year, so they trust him in that element.

However, he’s an unproven passer who will need to show his skills in that area in camp. Jack Tuttle is the most experienced passer on the roster. He completed 15 of 17 attempts as a backup in 2023 and he had nearly 200 attempts at Indiana, where he played from 2019-22. Former walk-on Davis Warren has attempted 14 passes at Michigan and he could be in the mix as well. Get more updates on the Michigan QB at The Michigan Insider.

Another one of the Michigan football headlines surrounds the style of offense that Moore will implement. When Moore filled in for a suspended Harbaugh late in 2023, Michigan largely leaned on its ground game. However, Michigan might not be dominant on the offense line this season and Moore will have time to implement his own wrinkles.

With a strong defense and running game leading the way most seasons, the Wolverines never finished in the top three of the Big Ten in passing under Harbaugh. It’s unlikely that Moore will completely overhaul the program’s philosophy, but fans are eager to see if Michigan airs it out more in 2024 and beyond.
