Texas football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, updated depth chart with no CJ Baxter by Longhorns experts

The Texas football roster suffered a major blow on the first fully padded practice of fall camp, as sophomore running back CJ Baxter went down with a season-ending knee injury. Baxter was expected to be the school’s newest star running back after averaging 4.8 yards per carry and scoring five touchdowns as a freshman. Head coach Steve Sarkisian now has a decision to make behind junior running back Jaydon Blue on the Texas football depth chart. Which young running backs are in line for the most playing time during the 2024 Texas football camp?

There are other position battles taking place during the Longhorns’ fall practices, including at safety and tight end. The 2024 Texas football schedule begins with a home game against Colorado State on August 31, so every practice is important right now. Top Texas Longhorns practice storylines

The top Texas football headline from fall camp is CJ Baxter’s season-ending injury. The sophomore not only played a pivotal role as a runner last year, but he was also developing into a key blocker in pass protection and caught 24 passes out of the backfield. Texas gave up the second-most sacks in the Big 12 last season (28), and it could be even more difficult to keep Quinn Ewers on his feet following Baxter’s injury.

Blue is now the clear choice to be the RB1 on the Texas football depth chart heading into the season after averaging 6.1 yards per carry and 9.6 yards per reception last year. Sophomore Quintrevion Wisner played a limited role last season, while Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson are freshmen battling for playing time. The Longhorns will need to establish their new depth chart in fall camp, and Horns247 is on site for practices. Get more updates on the Texas running back competition at Horns247.

Another one of the Texas football headlines surrounds the Longhorns tight ends. They are replacing their top tight end from last season, as Ja’Tavion Sanders is now in the NFL after catching 45 passes for 682 yards and two touchdowns. Senior tight end Gunnar Helm had 14 receptions for 192 yards and two scores of his own, and he is hoping to take a step forward this season.

However, he is competing with Alabama transfer Amari Niblack for playing time. Niblack caught 20 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns for the Crimson Tide last season, bringing valuable experience and talent to Austin. Senior Juan Davis has reportedly been making noise in fall practice as well, despite being a special teams player at Texas over the last three years. There are also two young tight ends on the roster, so the depth chart will come into view throughout fall camp. Find out more about Texas’ tight ends at Horns247
