Texas A&M football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart without Rueben Owens from Aggies insiders

Texas A&M football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart without Rueben Owens from Aggies insiders

After a half-dozen years of failing to meet expectations, Texas A&M football moved on from former coach Jimbo Fisher. Mike Elko is now tasked with building a Texas A&M football roster that can compete with the SEC heavyweights. His first full Texas A&M football recruiting class appears to be on the way in that regard, with the Aggies boasting a No. 6 ranking for the Class of 2025. However, the 2024 Texas A&M football depth chart still has holes in it, particularly at running back after Rueben Owens was lost for the year with a lower-body injury.

Additionally, the Aggies lost offensive line starters Bryce Foster to Kansas and Derrick Graham to Tulane via the transfer portal. Elko’s background is on the defensive side of the ball, so he’ll rely on his offensive staff to identify the Aggies who can help fill these voids that emerge during Texas A&M football camp. Top Texas A&M Aggies practice storylines

The top Texas A&M football headline from fall camp is the season-ending injury to Rueben Owens. The No. 2 running back in the Class of 2023, Owens led all SEC freshmen in rushing yards last year en route to earning SEC All-Freshman honors. He ranked third on the team with 385 yards on the ground, and fortunately for Aggies fans, the team’s top two rushers will return, Amari Daniels (532 yards) and Le’Veon Moss (484 yards).

The Aggies have a commitment from Class of 2025 four-star prospect Deondrae Riden, but they could rely on the son of the NFL’s rushing king to help bridge the gap until then. EJ Smith, son of Emmitt Smith, joins A&M after transferring from Stanford as the Dallas native returns to Texas. He figures to be an asset in the passing game after notching 33 receptions a year ago, compared to Daniels and Moss combining for just 25 catches. Find out who is standing out in camp at GigEm247

Another storyline for Texas A&M football camp is the impact that incoming transfer Nic Scourton will have. A native of Bryan, Texas, Scourton spent his first two years at Purdue. He led the Big Ten with 10 sacks last season before deciding he wanted a change of scenery, and Scourton was the top-ranked edge rusher in the transfer portal. He landed close to home in College Station and will help replace Walter Nolen, the former No. 2 overall recruit who transferred to Ole Miss this offseason.

Scourton brings more than just pass-rushing chops to the Aggies, and his presence alone should elevate the entire defense. “He isn’t just an edge rusher versus the passing game… he is also strong enough in his upper body and legs to set the edge against the run. Scourton is capable of making a team look bad for long stretches because it’s so difficult to account for him,” Tarpley said. Apart from Nolen, A&M also lost leading sack artist Edgerrin Cooper to the NFL, making identifying those who can get to the QB a priority during Texas A&M camp practice. Get updates on all the transfers at GigEm247.
