Michigan football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions from known Wolverines insiders

Michigan football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions from known Wolverines insiders

Last season’s Michigan football team was a heavy favorite in virtually every game until November. The 2024 Michigan football camp has added urgency because the defending champions will play a front-loaded schedule. In addition to opening with a Fresno State squad that has won at least nine games for three straight years, Michigan also faces No. 4 Texas, No. 23 USC and its opponent in last year’s title game, Washington, within the first six games of the schedule.

That means new head coach Sherrone Moore needs to quickly settle the 2024 Michigan football depth chart and have the Wolverines ready for top-tier competition. Who is positioning themselves to start for Michigan football in 2024? Top Michigan Wolverines practice storylines

All eyes remain on the quarterback battle as the Wolverines look to set their starter before game week arrives. Redshirt sophomore Alex Orji has yet to lock down the job, but he appears to be the favorite. Viewed as a hybrid quarterback/athlete coming out of high school, then-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh saw Orji as a QB. Though some of the offensive staff has turned over since that point, Orji is trying to hold off veterans Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren to be QB1 in this offense.

“Michigan always talked to me about how they saw me playing and how they saw my abilities fitting into the scheme, making a different scheme or whatever it may have been,” Orji told TMI. “And now having (OC) Kirk Campbell, everything that he does is gonna come to light on the field.” Get more updates on the Michigan QB at The Michigan Insider.

Michigan fans are also eager to see the new-look defense under Martindale. The long-time NFL assistant has ties to the Harbaugh family after working with John Harbaugh and the Ravens from 2012-21. Now he takes over for Jesse Minter, who followed Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers.

One of the foundations of this unit will be the interior defensive line. Michigan has arguably the best defensive tackle duo in the country in Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant and Martindale is looking to keep them on the field more after the 2023 defense featured a big rotation. “I’ve been working on my conditioning, going more plays in a row,” Grant told TMI. “Coach Wink has been stressing that with me and Mason because we have bigger and more competition early.” Find out more about Sherrone Moore’s new offense at The Michigan Insider
