2021 MLB playoffs: Dodgers vs. Giants odds, NLDS Game 3 picks, predictions from proven computer simulation

The San Francisco Giants edged the Los Angeles Dodgers in the regular season, winning 10 of the 19 games in the series to capture the National League West crown. San Francisco won the final three sets, taking two of three in each of the final two series. The Giants will need to repeat the feat in the best-of-five NL Division Series in order to advance, beginning with Game 3 in Los Angeles on Monday night. San Francisco received a dominant pitching performance from Logan Webb to take the NLDS opener, but the Dodgers erupted offensively in Game 2 to even the series at one victory apiece.

First pitch at Dodger Stadium is scheduled for 9:37 p.m. ET. Los Angeles sends right-hander Max Scherzer (15-4, 2.46 ERA) to the mound against former Dodgers southpaw Alex Wood (10-4, 3.83). Los Angeles is the -203 favorite (risk $203 to win $100) on the money line in the latest Dodgers vs. Giants odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over-under for total runs scored is 7.5. Why you should back the Dodgers

Scherzer has not been his usual self of late, allowing five runs while failing to get through six innings in each of his final two regular-season starts before lasting just 4 1/3 frames against St. Louis in the NL Wild Card Game. But the three-time Cy Young Award winner has yet to lose since being acquired from Washington at the trade deadline, going 7-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 12 outings. The Dodgers have won all 12 of those games and are very familiar with Wood, who went 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in three turns versus his former team this season.

A.J. Pollock, who matched his career high with 21 home runs in 2021, has had plenty of success against Wood. The 33-year-old left fielder has gone 10-for-25 with three doubles, two homers and three RBIs versus the left-hander and has driven in a team high-tying two runs thus far this postseason. Los Angeles is expected to field a lineup that includes three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols, who has victimized left-handers for 13 of his 17 homers this year and posted a .294 batting average and .939 OPS against them as opposed to .180 and .500, respectively, versus righties.

Why you should back the Giants

Wood is quite familiar with the Dodgers as he spent five of the previous six seasons with them before signing with San Francisco in January. The 30-year-old won the World Series with Los Angeles last year and has made 18 postseason appearances (two starts) with the club, notching his only career playoff win by tossing a scoreless 18th inning against Boston in Game 3 of the 2018 World Series. Wood has allowed only two runs over 13 innings in his last three starts and has yielded fewer than three in each of his last six turns.

The Giants, who went 12-1 when Wood started after a loss during the regular season, have been led offensively in the series by a trio of veterans. Former NL MVP Buster Posey has been the biggest contributor, going 4-for-8 with a two run homer. Kris Bryant, who also has won the NL MVP, went 3-for-3 with a solo blast in the series opener while Brandon Crawford also went deep in Game 1 before recording two hits and an RBI in Saturday’s loss.
