Serena Williams is on the road to recovery after having a procedure done to remove a branchial cyst that was “the size of a small grapefruit” from her neck. In a video that she posted to social media, Williams revealed that the cyst was successfully removed and “all is OK.”
In the post, Williams revealed that she discovered a lump on her neck back in May, and had an MRI performed shortly after. She was informed that she didn’t need to get it removed right away, but Williams stated that “it kept growing.”
More testing of the cyst revealed that it was negative for cancer, but her doctors informed Williams that she should get the cyst removed.
“So this is me removing it. I am feeling so grateful, and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all I’m healthy,” William said in a video.
William also posted that she is “still recovering, but getting better. Health always comes first.”
Williams, 43, announced her retirement from professional tennis in September 2022, which came shortly before competing at the 2022 US Open. The 2022 US Open ended up being her final Grand Slam tournament.
Over the years, Williams secured 23 Grand Slam titles in singles competition, which was the most of any woman. She also won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with her sister, Venus. Williams’ final Grand slam singles title came when she won the 2017 Australian Open.
