What to Know
A Sun Belt battle is on tap between the South Alabama Jaguars and the Georgia Southern Eagles at 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday at Hancock Whitney Stadium. These two teams are out to turn their luck around after having lost tight contests in their previous games.
South Alabama fought the good fight in their overtime contest against the Texas State Bobcats last week but wound up with a less-than-desirable result, falling 33-31. No one had a standout game offensively for the Jaguars, but they got scores from RB AJ Phillips and TE Lincoln Sefcik.
Speaking of close games: Georgia Southern was close but no cigar last week as they fell 27-24 to the Troy Trojans. A silver lining for the Eagles was the play of WR Khaleb Hood, who punched in one rushing touchdown.
The Georgia Southern defensive unit accumulated four sacks for a loss of 24 yards. It was a group effort with four guys contributing.
This next game is expected to be close, with the Jaguars going off at just a 2.5-point favorite. Those burned by picking them against the spread last week might want to keep in mind that the team has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season.
The losses put South Alabama at 3-2 and the Eagles at 2-4. A pair of defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: South Alabama is stumbling into the matchup with the 154th most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up seven on the season. Georgia Southern has experienced some struggles of their own as they are 249th worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 20 on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
