Who’s Playing
Purdue @ No. 2 Iowa
Current Records: Purdue 3-2; Iowa 6-0
What to Know
The Purdue Boilermakers and the Iowa Hawkeyes are even-steven against one another since November of 2015 (3-3), but not for long. Purdue’s week off comes to an end as they meet up with the Hawkeyes at 3:30 p.m. ET at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday. These two teams have allowed few points on average (Purdue 15.4, Iowa 13), so any points scored will be well earned.
Purdue came up short against the Minnesota Golden Gophers two weeks ago, falling 20-13. QB Aidan O’Connell had a memorable game, but not in the way you want to be remembered: despite one touchdown, he threw one interception and fumbled the ball once.
Meanwhile, it was a close one, but last week Iowa sidestepped the Penn State Nittany Lions for a 23-20 victory. No one had a standout game offensively for the Hawkeyes, but they got scores from WR Nico Ragaini and WR Charlie Jones.
Special teams collected 11 points for Iowa. K Caleb Shudak booted in three field goals, the longest a 48-yarder in the third quarter, which ultimately accounted for the difference in the game.
The Boilermakers have to know they’ll be fighting an uphill battle given the 11.50 point spread they are up against. Now might not be the best time to take Purdue against the spread since they’ve let down bettors for the past three consecutive games.
Purdue is now 3-2 while the Hawkeyes sit at 6-0. A couple offensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Purdue is 215th worst in the nation in rushing yards per game, with only 89.4 on average. Iowa has experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the contest with the 188th fewest yards per game in the nation, having accrued only 317.5 on average. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
