Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns were down to their final play before halftime when the quarterback found wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones for a 57-yard Hail Mary conversion. The score brought the Browns within single digits after being down 20-0. According to Next Gen Stats, the pass had a 15.4 percent chance of being completed. The ball traveled 66.4 yards in the air, which is the longest completed pass in the Next Gen Stats era (sine 2016) by 2 yards.
Peoples-Jones was responsible for Cleveland’s only other first-half touchdown as well. The Browns need someone to step up as tight ends have been dropping passes and Jarvis Landry remains unavailable. Odell Beckham Jr. left the game with a shoulder injury but did return to the sideline.
It was an otherwise putrid first half for the Browns. Mayfield is responsible for one fumble and one interception. Kevin Stefanski’s team was penalized seven times for 63 yards in the first half.
Coming into the game, the sixth-round pick out of Michigan had nine receptions for 127 yards this season.
The Browns carried a 3-2 record into Sunday’s game against Arizona, which is without head coach Kliff Kingsbury due to COVID-19.
