Death, taxes, and Tom Brady winning football games. It’s been this way for over two decades now to the point that even a game-winning drive with just 84 seconds remaining on the clock at the start of the series seems routine. And that’s just what Brady and Co. made it look like in Thursday’s season-opening 31-29 win over the Cowboys. A Chris Godwin fumble at the goal-line opened the window for Dallas to drive down the field and go up 29-28 with under two minutes to spare, but Brady was able to zip back up the field and set up a game-winning field goal attempt by Ryan Succop to hand the defending champs it’s first win of the 2021 regular season.
However, this wasn’t just a regular “W” for Brady. Securing this victory made the seven-time Super Bowl champion the oldest starting quarterback to win a game in league history at 44 years, 37 days old. This broke the mark previously held by Vinny Testaverde, who was able to record a win at 44 years, 19 days old as the starter for the Carolina Panthers.
At this point in his career, every move by Brady seems to rewrite the NFL record book. He also became the fourth-oldest individual on record (since 1932) to play in a season-opening game and is the oldest non-kicker to ever start a Week 1 game. Thursday marked the 300th regular-season start of Brady’s career, which is a feat that has never been reached prior.
Not only is Brady simply crossing these age-defying records off, but he’s doing so while still playing at an elite level. On Thursday, he completed 32 of his 50 passes for 379 yards, four touchdowns, and two picks in the comeback win.
Just another day at the office for Mr. Brady.
