Gonzaga coach Mark Few has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Idaho following his arrest in September in which he submitted two blood alcohol samples over the legal limit. According to court documents obtained by the Associated Press, Few will also pay a $1,000 fine in lieu of spending four days in jail. He was facing a maximum penalty of six months in jail.
In addition to his misdemeanor plea and fine, the Bulldogs coach must also perform 24 hours community service, complete an alcohol and drug class and submit to using an ignition interlock device on unsupervised probation for the next year. Few has already been suspended one game by the school, which he will serve in Gonzaga’s season-opener against Dixie State. He will also miss the team’s Kraziness at the Kennel event and two exhibition games as part of the punishment for his arrest.
“I again offer my sincere apology and I remain committed to learning from this mistake,” said Few two weeks ago. “As a consequence of my error in judgment, I will not be present at Kraziness in the Kennel and the first three games of our season. I know this impacts our student-athletes and the coaching staff as we begin the season. I understand the severity of my actions and am sorry for the impact this consequence has on our team.”
Gonzaga ended last season as the national runner-up with a 31-1 record. It enters the season No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 with a returning cast of characters led by big man Drew Timme and Andrew Nembhard and featuring No. 1 overall incoming recruit Chet Holmgren.
