What you need to know about the Spurs

The Spurs finished last season just a cut below .500, and only won two of their final 12 games to close out the 2020-21 season. They looked like a completely different team on Wednesday night, when they shot 50 percent from the field and knocked down 13-of-30 3-point attempts against the Magic. Devin Vassell came off the bench to play 25 minutes ad led the Spurs in scoring with 19 points.

San Antonio’s defense did its job defending Orlando’s outside shooting, and held the Magic to a paltry 31 percent from beyond the arc. Center Jakob Poeltl had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and added seven assists to keep the offense on track. Fourth-year shooting guard Lonnie Walker IV also had a nice game off the bench, scoring 17 points.

What you need to know about the Nuggets

Reigning MVP Nikola Jokic picked right up where he left off last season against the Suns, and scored 27 points to lead all scorers in Denver’s win over Phoenix on Wednesday. He added 13 rebounds and two steals, but only made an uncharacteristic 1-of-6 3-point attempts in the victory. In three games against San Antonio last season, Jokic drained seven of his 15 3-point attempts.

Will Barton had a nice debut as a second scoring option for Denver, and came away with 20 points on 57-percent shooting from the field. Monte Morris, who made his first start at point guard this season in place of injured Jamal Murray, finished with just nine points and three assists.
