The New Orleans Saints are bringing back an old friend into the fold. On Wednesday, CBS Sports HQ NFL Insider Josina Anderson reported the Houston Texans are trading running back Mark Ingram to the Saints — the club where he began his NFL career. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the deal is still being finalized.
The 31-year-old was originally drafted by the Saints with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after an incredible run at the University of Alabama which included a Heisman Trophy campaign in 2009. In eight seasons with the Saints, Ingram made three Pro Bowls and rushed for a total of 6,007 yards and 50 touchdowns.
Ingram signed with the Baltimore Ravens ahead of the 2019 season and made an immediate impact on what became the top rushing offense in the NFL, as he recorded 1,265 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns. However, he was waived this offseason and scooped up by the Texans.
Ingram has started in all seven games he has played for the Texans this season, and has rushed for 294 yards and one touchdown on 92 carries. The Saints clearly felt as though they needed some help at running back, as Tony Jones Jr. was placed on IR with an ankle injury a couple weeks ago. Now, Ingram will be reunited with Alvin Kamara — who is apparently happy with the news.
The NFL trade deadline is less than a week away, and we could see more transactions in the coming days. After the news of Ingram’s trade broke, Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks tweeted, “This is bullshit. Such a joke.” This could be a reaction to the Ingram trade, or maybe he learned he could be on the way out of town as well.
