The San Francisco 49ers added more depth to their pass rush, acquiring Charles Omenihu from the Houston Texans for a 2023 sixth-round pick, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Omenihu, a 2019 fifth-round pick of the Texans, has no sacks in six games this season but has 16 pressures, 11 tackles, and three quarterback hits.

Omenihu is coming off a season during which he had 16 quarterback hits and four sacks with 30 pressures. Still just 24 years old, the pass rusher has demonstrated potential on a Texans defense that has just 68 pressures on the season — second-fewest in the NFL

The 49ers are buying low on Omenihu, hoping he can develop into a valuable rotational piece for the rest of the season and into 2022. Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa remain the starters on the edge, but Omenihu can compete Dee Ford, Samson Ebukam, and Arden Key for snaps in the rotation.

San Francisco gets Omenihu with a year and a half left on his rookie contract, while Houston receives some draft capital in year one of their rebuild. The team is still looking to acquire draft capital after losing most of it over the last few years as a result of the Laremy Tunsil and David Johnson deals that set the franchise back.

A late-round pick may not be much, but the Texans getting any draft capital at this rate was worth the deal.
