Jamel Johnson, a four-star defensive back prospect out of Seguin High School in Arlington, Texas, announced that he will play college football for Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns live on CBS Sports HQ. Johnson chose Texas over a finalist group of Oklahoma, Texas A&M and LSU.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound safety is the 15th-ranked safety and the No. 187 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. He is the first player in the 2023 recruiting cycle to make his pledge to Sarkisian’s Longhorns.

“They brought me in as family. They showed me love,” Johnson said.

Cooper Petagna, national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, provided this scouting report on Johnson.

Ideal size and length at 6-foot plus, possesses growth potential to add additional weight to frame. Displays good athleticism on both sides of the ball. Reactionary athlete that shows the ability to transition in and out of breaks quickly. Utilizes length well in press coverage and at the point of attack. Flashes good ball awareness and activity playing the ball in the air. Appears to have above average play speed. Willing tackler that will strike you and excels in run support. Long speed and ability to play off-ball are a concern at times. Could potentially develop into a safety at the next level, depending on the defensive scheme. Has the ability to contribute early on special teams and develop into a good starter at the next level.

At Seguin, Johnson’s decorated career includes first-team All-District honors in 2020. He was also named the state’s District 5-5A-II Freshman of the Year in 2019.
