Georgia State vs. Northeastern odds, line: College basketball picks, Nov. 12 predictions from proven model

The Northeastern Huskies visit Atlanta on Friday afternoon to take on the Georgia State Panthers in the second game of the college basketball season for each team. The Huskies of the Colonial Athletic Conference opened the season with a 65-58 loss to Colgate on Tuesday, while the Panthers, members of the Sun Belt Conference, cruised to a 97-37 win against NAIA Brewton-Parker College the same day. Georgia State has reached the NCAA Tournament three times since 2015, while Northeastern has done so twice in that span. It is the first meeting between the former CAA foes since Georgia State moved to the Sun Belt in 2013 so its football team could move up to the FBS level.

The Panthers are the 8.5-point favorites in the latest Northeastern vs. Georgia State odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over-under for total points is set at 142.5. Why the Panthers can cover

Georgia State faced an inferior foe Tuesday night in tiny Brewton-Parker from Mount Vernon, Ga., but it had great balance in the scoring department. Key forward Eliel Nsoseme might be out for a while with a knee injury, but star guard Corey Allen had a team-high 20 points. Justin Roberts added 19 points and had six steals, while Nelson Phillips scored 15 and had five steals. Kane Williams chipped in 11 points and seven assists. Jalen Thomas had a team-high six rebounds and blocked three shots as the team had seven blocks overall and 21 steals.

The Panthers averaged 80.3 points per game last season, with five players scoring in double figures. Allen led the team at 15 points per game and shot a Sun Belt-best 42.5 percent from 3-point range. Roberts and Williams combined for 26.1 points and 8.7 assists, and Thomas averaged 1.6 blocked shots. The team blocked 4.4 shots per game, also getting 1.4 from Nsoseme, and averaged 7.1 steals. It led the Sun Belt in shooting percentage (46.8), was third in opponent percentage (41.3) and won by an average of 7.6 points (second).

Why the Huskies can cover

Northeastern had a tougher foe in its opener, and it led at halftime before Colgate caught fire and made 48 percent of its shots in the second half. Jahmyl Telfort led the offensive effort on Tuesday with 17 points, while Chris Doherty had a career-best 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Shaquille Walters also reached double digits with 10 points and had seven boards, all on the defensive end. Walter was seventh in the CAA in rebounding last season, averaging 6.6 per game, and he averaged 10.5 points while Telfort scored 11.8 in 2020-21.

The team is trying to compensate for the loss of Tyson Walker, who led the team in nearly every offensive category last year but transferred to Michigan State. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Walters is tough for opponents to stop, and he knows the offense well enough to run the point when heeded. Walters shot better than 38 percent on threes last year and averaged more than a steal per game. The Huskies shot almost 44 percent from the field and more than 35 percent from beyond the arc last season, led by Walters and Telfort (36.6) and Jason Strong (37.2).
