Fair or not, when you’re the son of arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, you’re going to get some extra attention. Now entering his junior season at the Sierra Canyon School in Southern California, Bronny James underwent knee surgery in February to repair a torn meniscus, and many were waiting to see how he would respond.
Well, it looks like he’s recovering just fine.
Bronny’s father, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, shared a video of his son throwing down a ridiculous off-the-backboard windmill during the dunk contest at Sierra Canyon’s Midnight Madness on Friday night. As you can see, Bronny’s eyes are at rim-level at the peak of his jump — not bad for a 17 year old. The elder James attached the caption, “Scary hours coming soon!! 😱😱😱😱😱” to his proud post.
LeBron also shared a still photo of Bronny’s head at the rim, to which former teammate Dwyane Wade replied, “Sheesh” and Chris Paul responded with eyeball emojis.
James, who is listed at 6-foot-3, has clearly not fallen far from the family tree in the athleticism department. You can see full highlights of the scrimmage and dunk contest in the video below.
James averaged 4.1 points in 15 minutes per game as a freshman at Sierra Canyon, but didn’t play during his sophomore season due to the pandemic and his knee injury. He is currently listed as the No. 38 recruit in the 2023 class in the 247Sports composite rankings, and has reportedly taken an unofficial visit to Duke.
Given his pedigree, James surely will not lack for suitors if he chooses to play college basketball, especially if he has a productive year as a junior. LeBron has also said that he would love to play with Bronny in the NBA at some point if everything works out.
“That’s definitely one of my goals, but that’s a long-term goal,” James said in March. “My son right now is in high school and enjoying what being a teenager is all about. But that would be pretty cool to go on my resume.”
