The Ball State Cardinals will be returning home after a two-game road trip. Ball State and the Central Michigan Chippewas will face off in a Mid-American battle at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Scheumann Stadium. The Cardinals are out to stop a five-game streak of losses at home.
It was all tied up 17-17 at halftime, but Ball State was not quite the Northern Illinois Huskies’ equal in the second half when they met on Wednesday. Ball State had victory within their grasp but couldn’t quite capture it as the team lost 30-29 to NIU. The game was as close as the oddsmakers predicted, but Ball State had been the slight favorite coming in. Ball State’s defeat came about despite a quality game from WR Justin Hall, who punched in two rushing touchdowns.
Meanwhile, the Kent State Golden Flashes typically have all the answers at home, but on Wednesday CMU proved too difficult a challenge. The Chippewas were the clear victors by a 54-30 margin over the Golden Flashes. The win came about thanks to a strong surge after the first quarter to overcome a 14 to nothing deficit. RB Lew Nichols III went supernova for CMU as he rushed for four TDs and 215 yards on 43 carries.
The Cardinals are now 5-5 while CMU sits at 6-4. Two defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Ball State is stumbling into the contest with the 206th most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 18 on the season. CMU has experienced some struggles of their own as they are 211th worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 19 on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
