Purdue became the first team in men’s college basketball this season to notch consecutive victories over ranked opponents over the weekend and was one of the biggest risers in Monday’s Coaches Poll as a result, moving up three spots from No. 7 to No. 4 on Monday in the first in-season iteration of the poll.
The Boilermakers jumped Michigan, Texas and Villanova on the heels of victories over No. 18 North Carolina and No. 5 Villanova to win a second consecutive Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic title. Baylor and Duke also jumped the trio to move to No. 5 and No. 6 in the poll, respectively. Alabama and Memphis both leapt into the top 10 with the Tide rising to No. 9 and the Tigers to No. 10.
In the first poll since the preseason, which was released on Oct. 27, Arizona took the crown as the biggest mover in the rankings. The Wildcats (5-0) claimed consecutive wins over Wichita State and Michigan over the weekend to rise from unranked to No. 19, the only team to rise more than eight spots. They are one of five newcomers to this week’s top 25 along with BYU (No. 18), Seton Hall (No. 20), Florida (No. 24) and Southern California (No. 25).
Dropping out of the poll this week was Ohio State, Florida State, North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia. Virginia is the only of the five to not receive any votes this week from coaches in the midst of a 2-2 start to the 2021-22 season. Oregon was the biggest faller to still maintain ranking status as it moved from No. 12 to No. 23.
