The New York Jets have had to deal with a myriad of injuries on both sides of the ball in 2021, and another notable name is set to join the many others on injured reserve. On Monday, Jets first-year head coach Robert Saleh told reporters that wide receiver Corey Davis will undergo core muscle surgery this week, and that he will miss the remainder of the 2021 season.
“I feel awful for Corey, he’s one of the true pros in this league, goes about his business the right way, shows up every day to work,” said Saleh. “So for his season to be cut short, I know he’s hurt, but at the same time when we get him back next year he’ll be better than ever.”
Davis has missed three out of the last six games for the Jets due to nagging injuries, and left Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles early with what was described to be an ankle injury. Reporters indicated that he had reinjured his groin, however. Davis was questionable to play Sunday due to the groin injury, which he suffered in October and caused him to miss a few games.
The former No. 5 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft left the Tennessee Titans in free agency this past offseason and signed a reported three-year, $37.5 million deal which included $27 million guaranteed. He finishes his first season in New York having caught 34 passes for 492 yards and four touchdowns in nine games played.
The 3-9 Jets will now have to rely even more on veteran Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims and the budding rookie Elijah Moore in the passing game.
