The odds are in favor of either the Bulldogs repeating or the Crimson Tide winning their second title in three years
Georgia and Alabama are early favorites to win the 2022 national championship one day after the Bulldogs topped the Tide for their first title since 1980, according to fresh odds released by Caesars’ Sportsbook. Both UGA and Alabama have 13/4 odds to win it all in the 2022 college football season.
The Bulldogs are expected to lose several key contributors with five players ranked among the top 50 in the CBS Sports NFL Draft Prospect Rankings, including projected first-rounders Nakobe Dean, Derion Kendrick and Jordan Davis. However, Georgia has recruited like crazy over the last several seasons and will field another talented squad.
Conversely, Alabama’s best players, quarterback Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson, will be back in 2022 after exploding onto the scene as sophomores. Both should quickly become favorites to win the Heisman Trophy after Young became the first ‘Bama signal-caller to win the award in 2021. The Tide had a lead in the fourth quarter of the title game despite losing both 1,000-yard receivers with injuries.
Ohio State trails close behind with 7-1 odds after failing to reach the Big Ten Championship Game for the first time since 2016, the year before Ryan Day arrived as offensive coordinator. Bookmakers believe Clemson will rebound from its frustrating 2021 and slotted the Tigers fourth at 12-1 odds. No other team has better than 25-1 odds.
In the intermediate range, Lincoln Riley’s old and new teams — Oklahoma and USC, respectively — hold 25-1 odds, which ties them with Texas A&M. Michigan is right behind at 30-1, while Notre Dame faces 40-1 odds in Marcus Freeman’s first season as head coach. Texas experienced the longest losing streak since 1957 this season, but the Longhorns jumped up to the board to 50-1 odds after adding transfer QB Quinn Ewers.
Down the board, Utah could be an interesting play after winning the Pac-12 and earning a Rose Bowl trip. The Utes have just 50-1 odds. Similarly, Baylor earned the first top-five ranking in program history and has a wave of fifth-year seniors returning in the trenches. The Bears have 60-1 odds. Kentucky (125-1), Nebraska (150-1) and Washington (200-1) are three schools who could dramatically over-perform their spot.
