What to Know
The La Salle Explorers haven’t won a contest against the Massachusetts Minutemen since Jan. 30 of 2019, but they’ll be looking to end the drought on Saturday. La Salle’s road trip will continue as they head to William D. Mullins Center at noon ET to face off against UMass. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they’ll have plenty of motivation to get the ‘W.’
The Explorers have to be aching after a bruising 90-64 loss to the Saint Louis Billikens on Wednesday. La Salle was surely aware of their 13.5-point disadvantage in the point spread, but the foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result. Forward Clifton Moore put forth a good effort for the losing side as he had 20 points in addition to five rebounds and four blocks. Moore has also now had at least three blocks in his past four games.
Meanwhile, the game between UMass and the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Wednesday was not a total blowout, but with UMass falling 83-71 on the road, it was darn close to turning into one. Despite the defeat, the Minutemen got a solid performance out of guard T.J. Weeks Jr., who shot 5-for-9 from beyond the arc and finished with 19 points and six boards.
The losses put the Explorers at 7-16 and UMass at 11-13. A couple stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: La Salle has only been able to knock down 41.30% percent of their shots, which is the 42nd lowest field goal percentage in college basketball. UMass has experienced some struggles of their own as they have allowed their opponents to shoot 48.60% from the floor on average, which is the 355th highest shooting percentage allowed in college basketball. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
