Fordham coach Kyle Neptune will be named the new coach at Villanova, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. Wildcats coach Jay Wright called an impromptu team meeting on Wednesday and told the team he is retiring, and the school’s succession plan includes Neptune as Wright’s successor. Neptune, 37, spent the last season at Fordham — his first run as a head coach — where he went 16-16.
Neptune began his coaching career in 2008 at Villanova as a video coordinator and administrative intern before jumping to Niagara for a three-year run as an assistant coach. He then returned to Villanova as an assistant under Wright from 2013 to 2021, becoming the longest-tenured Wildcats assistant under Wright before leaving the gig in 2021 to take the Fordham job. During his first and second stint with the program, Villanova made three Final Fours and won two national championships, all the while earning the Hall of Famer’s trust.
“During his time at Villanova, Kyle has demonstrated all the qualities you want to see in a young coach — commitment, passion, and the ability to communicate with young people.” Wright said previously. “He is a well-rounded and talented young coach who we are thrilled to have with us.”
