Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas will try to become the oldest trainer to win when he saddles Secret Oath in the 2022 Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course. The 86-year-old Lukas, who has won the second leg of the Triple Crown six times, is trying to surpass Art Sherman, who was 77 when he trained California Chrome to victory in the 2014 Preakness. This year, Lukas’ Secret Oath is coming off a victory in the Kentucky Oaks and is 9-2 in the 2022 Preakness Stakes odds. The Steve Asmussen-trained Epicenter is the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the nine-horse 2022 Preakness Stakes field, while the Chad Brown-trained Early Voting is 7-2. One surprise: Yu isn’t high on Simplification, even though he is one of the 2022 Preakness Stakes favorites. Trained by Antonio Sano, Simplification has won three times in eight career starts. His biggest victory was the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 5.
In the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, Simplification rallied to place fourth, but that run was aided by a pace meltdown that took out all of the horses who showed early speed. “Simplification ran a respectable fourth in the Derby, but I don’t think he’s winning the Preakness,” Yu told SportsLine. Yu is using Simplification only sparingly in her Preakness Stakes 2022 bets.
